IT PROLONGS OUR LIFE! We live in such a busy, media-driven society. Practices that quiet the mind are so important to our physical health and healthy aging. Telomeres are the ends of our genetic material. They fray and shorten with age, leading to chronic disease and shortening our lifespan. Two things have been shown in the medical literature to prolong the length of our telomeres. You guessed it! One of these is meditation! The other is the Mediterranean diet (which I will cover in another blog!)
You do not have to don heavy robes, shave your head and sit in a corner for hours to get the results you need from meditation. As little as 7-10 minutes per day is effective. I like the app “Headspace” and use Andy’s 10 minute meditations often. The photo is an inspiration from his Blue Sky analogy. Imagine the clouds are your thoughts and the chatter in your head. Rise above them and gaze at the blue sky!
At the Institute for Functional Medicine conference, one of the speakers quoted Mark Twain: “I’ve lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.” So much of our stress is brought on by our negative thoughts and catastrophic thinking of the “what ifs”. Meditations can help to quiet that part of our mind by manifesting positive thoughts and energy.
Deepak Chopra and Oprah periodically have a free 21-day meditation series. They utilize a mantra, a new technique for me but I like it! They have just launched a new series titled Energy of Attraction: Manifesting Your Best Life!

Meditation is so underrated and I suppose mainly because it has not been a part of western culture. I especially like these mentors: Dr. Joe Dispenza, Bob Proctor and Jesse Elder.
